About Dima May

Dima May is a software architect and developer of large enterprise applications that focus in the area of distributed computing. His special interests are cloud-based applications and information retrieval. Dima holds a Bachelors of Computer Science from University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and a Masters of Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University.

Dima has designed, developed, and deployed a multitude of Java-based enterprise applications while working for Fortune 500 companies such as AT&T and Raytheon, as well as serving as a consultant for the Intelligence Community. He has developed a multitude of Hadoop applications that heavily utilize HDFS, Map/Reduce, HBase and Zookeeper. Dima has served as a lead-developer of a highly reliable cloud-based distributed search service cluster, designed to run on many nodes to provide 100% service availability. The response latency was a main consideration, and the service is able to search through, categorize, and sort millions of records within milliseconds. He built the distributed search on top of HDFS, Map/Reduce, Zookeeper, HBase, Lucene, and Spring Framework. Dima successfully transitioned enterprise applications running against traditional relational databases and data warehouses into cloud-based Hadoop applications while accomplishing 100-fold performance improvement, simplifying architecture and reducing code complexity. In addition, he enjoys sharing his Hadoop knowledge with his students.
